Remember the movie, If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium? Well, if there’s topsoil, this must be the end.
We started off having some of the workers level out the ground and remove the most obnoxious rocks.
Then the fertilized topsoil was delivered — three dumptruck loads in all supplied by Meadows Landscape Supply in Maple Ridge — to the front…
…and back yards.
They raked and spread out the soil so that it was approximately two inches deep.
They also dug out the flower beds to about one foot deep, so that there would be extra potting soil there for our flowers and vegetables (the fertilized topsoil isn’t altogether different from potting soil, which just has less sand added usually). One of the things Mrs. Build really likes about the rock retaining walls in our sloping back yard is that she doesn’t have to think about where to put the gardens: they’re all laid out already!
The soil we are using is a fairly standard yard mix, which is about 60% actual soil, the remainder a mixture of sand (for help with drainage) and manure. This is great when you are seeding a lawn, as you really don’t need to add a commercial fertilizer to the ground when you seed. I love its gorgeous black loamy richness.
Now if the rain would just slow down, maybe my seed would have a chance to sprout! Pray for a stretch of good weather!

Yay for dirt! I’m crossing my fingers for some more sunshine too! Enough already.
